Reading Glasses After Cataract Surgery — Is This Normal?

Yes — and it is completely expected if you received a standard monofocal IOL. Here is why: your natural lens could focus at both distance and near because it was flexible and could change shape (a process called accommodation). The artificial IOL, while optically excellent, is fixed — it cannot change shape. So it is set for one distance, usually far.

Reading glasses compensate for this by adding the near focusing power that the fixed IOL cannot provide. Think of them as a natural extension of your new lens, not a failure of your surgery.

💡 Note: If you received a multifocal or EDOF IOL, you may need reading glasses only for very fine print. If you received a monofocal IOL, reading glasses are expected for near tasks.

Getting the Right Power

When and How to Get Your Reading Glass Prescription

Do not rush to get your reading glasses prescribed. After cataract surgery, the eye needs 4–6 weeks to fully settle and stabilise. Getting glasses too early means the power may change and the glasses become useless.

Daily Use

How to Use Reading Glasses Comfortably

  • 📖
    Reading distance: Hold reading material 30–40 cm from your eyes — roughly arm's length. If you need to hold it closer or further, the power may need adjusting.
  • 💡
    Lighting: Always read in good light. Poor lighting strains the eyes significantly — use a lamp directed at the page, not at your eyes.
  • ⏱️
    20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds to relax the eye muscles.
  • 📱
    Phone and screens: Increase your phone's text size (Settings → Accessibility → Larger Text). This reduces eye strain significantly.
  • 🧹
    Cleaning: Use the microfibre cloth provided. Never use tissue paper or your shirt — they scratch lenses. Rinse under water first, then wipe gently.
  • 😴
    Storage: Always keep in the hard case when not in use. Never place face-down on a surface.

💡 Single vision vs. bifocal: If you need glasses for both distance and near, consider bifocal or progressive lenses — one pair covers everything. Ask Dr. Laavanyaa at your follow-up visit.
